Scanning our Sheep
Every year we scan our sheep in the beginning of February with an ultrasound machine especially adapted for sheep!
We scan our ground sheep first – yearlings (first time ewes are called yearling and our older ladies. We also have a mixed bunch of Texel’s, Suffolk’s and Black Mountain Welsh which never venture to the mountain.
We have been scanning our sheep for 15 years now, and it really helps us prepare the sheep for lambing in the middle of March, when we hope the weather is warmer, less chance of snow and the grass is starting to green.
When the sheep are scanned, they are marked with a Red dot on their heads for empty, one dot on their back for twins and two dots mean triplets. In a couple of weeks, we will then sort these sheep into smaller bunches, separated into twins, triplets and singles. The older sheep, Twins, Triplets, mixed breeds and yearlings are all lambed in our sheds. These are the ones that require more care before and after birth. Our single ewes are lamb in the fields around the farm.
